MOLDOVA - Faw_Peter - 05-18-2008

Since we have here some members who haven't even heard of Moldova I decided to open this topic for describing this country, if anybody knows more things, please join us:

The Republic of Moldova (known also as Bessarabia, lately Moldavia) has a population of 3,383,332, which makes it the most densely populated of all countries in the former USSR area. About 78% of the people are Moldovans or Romanians. Large minority groups include Ukrainians (8.4%), Russians (5.1%) and Turks, Jews and Bulgarians (7.3%).

Chisinau is the capital of the Republic of Moldova. Moldova is the second smallest of the former Soviet states with 33,700km2. Chisinau is a city of 800,000 people which is surrounded by rural agricultural lands. Chisinau straddles the Bik River, a tributary of the Nistru River.

Moldova is in the Eastern European Time Zone (GMT+3 hours). When it is noon in Chisinau it is: 11:00 in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam, 10:00 in London, 07:00 in New York, 19:00 in Sydney and 13:00 in Moscow. Summertime (GMT+3 hours) is in effect from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
Moldova is a hilly plain. The country's average elevation is 147 m (about 482.3 ft) above sea level, with a maximum height of 429.5 m (about 1410 ft).

The climate is continental, with some modification of conditions by the Black Sea. Winters are mild, with average daily temperatures in January between -4 to -7 C ( about 23 to 27 F). Summers are quite warm, with average daily temperatures in July generally exceeding 25 C (68 F) and daily highs reaching 40 C (104 F) on occasion.

Re: MOLDOVA - Steven - 05-19-2008

I have once been in Moldova, but only transiting it when going to Ukraine. It has a special nature, but the roads are awful!

Re: MOLDOVA - Terry - 05-30-2008

Moldovan wine is sold all over the Europe, it's as tasty as the French one

Re: MOLDOVA - Benn - 06-18-2008

Moldova also practices "wine-therapy". It's one of the latest discoveries in the world that can help treat many diseases.

Re: MOLDOVA - Faw_Peter - 06-24-2008

Moldova has the world's greatest wine-cellar - 5 million bottles (registered in Guiness Book). You can find there any wine you like.

Re: MOLDOVA - M.Helen - 07-07-2008

oh, I remember this song! It was the best song of the summer 2005! Oh, the whole Europe had been listening to it! As far as I know the bad had broken up, and now only one soloist sings under the nick "Crazy loop"

Re: MOLDOVA - Terry - 07-09-2008

Anyway I don't like his songs.
Moldova can be considered a good place for those who like exotics. No, local people can't understand they live "exotically" but when Americans visit it, they consider it unusual.

Re: MOLDOVA - M.Helen - 08-08-2008

Is it true that Moldova is the only country in Europe that is governed by communists party? I read that recently in the internet. It should be even worse there than in Belarus... :-(

true, It is the only one run by a communist party in Europe.
I didn't know about it myself.

Re: MOLDOVA - Karl.in.eu - 08-16-2008

I found out about Moldova first at Euronews, they have one of those promotion ads, something like: “Let’s make it in Moldova”..

It is really exotic, because it is like Vietnam in the middle of the Europe.

Common, it can’t be that bad. It is situated in Europe, bordered by a European country (Romania).
Then how come Vietnam is the worst country?

I didn't mean worst, but poor. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, and that's a fact that talks for itself.

Re: MOLDOVA - M.Helen - 08-16-2008

According to my sources, Albania is Europe's poorest country!

Re: MOLDOVA - Hakan G - 08-17-2008

Can you post a link? I'm curious to see the top and bottom of the list.

Re: MOLDOVA - Benn - 08-20-2008

No, Moldova is the poorest country! Albania used to be! Now Moldova surpassed it

Re: MOLDOVA - Terry - 08-22-2008

according to GDP, the World Bank estimates Moldova's at 850$ per capita. That's the lowest in Europe.

Re: MOLDOVA - Benn - 08-25-2008

yes, I found this information. According to the same source, the 2nd Europe GDP goes to Ukraine: 2,278$ per capita.

Re: MOLDOVA - Terry - 08-29-2008

yes, you should notice a very big difference between Moldova and Ukraine:
2,278-850= 1,428 Confusedhock:

Re: MOLDOVA - Hakan G - 09-04-2008

what’s the point of a budget when the country's new credits are near the same amount?

Re: MOLDOVA - Faw_Peter - 09-08-2008

Hakan, there are two types of budget: deficit budget and surplus budget. I guess you are talking about a deficit budget, when expenses are higher than revenues.

Re: MOLDOVA - Hakan G - 09-12-2008

Yes I was speaking regarding the deficit budget, is this correct?

Re: MOLDOVA - Benn - 10-23-2008

that's nothing in comparison to the USA's external debts. It amounts to 3 trillion dollars Confusedhock: Confusedhock: Confusedhock:
