Obstacles for businesses in the Orient - KarL - 10-12-2009

Hello! I’m posting here to warn those who are going to start own business in [en.wikipedia . org/wiki/Kyrgyzstan] Kyrgyzstan. Just be prepared to resolve all sorts of issues during personal meetings with top officials of the country who will be expecting financial kickbacks in exchange for the things that you’re already entitled to. This is their lifestyle, and there’re no exceptions to it.
I’m saying this out of my personal experience, as I work for the [centerragold . com/properties/kumtor/] Kumtor Gold Companyin Kyrgyzstan. My executives haven’t taken this factor into account and are now selling the Company as a result. It began after Maksim Bakiyev, son of Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, started frequenting our central office. Well, there’re rumors circulating among us that he threatened to revoke our license, if we refuse to pay him the X part of our annual revenue. I don’t know whether it’s absolutely true or not, but you know, after one of such meetings our boss said that “we wouldn’t manage that much…we’ll have to quit it here”.
So guys, I’ve seen for myself that the outright lawlessness orchestrated by the President himself (of course through his son) is widespread practice in Kyrgyzstan. That’s what the “Oriental Democracy” means!
