If you travel from outside the EU then you need a passport.

Good idea to get yours renewed - Passport control correctly very wary of foreign travellers into the UK

Cyprus is part of the European Union, so you'll just need your identity card, a passport should/will not be necessary

Even though (southern) Cyprus and the UK are both in the EU, the UK has not signed up to the Schengen agreement so therefore you will need your passport to gain entry to this country.

Your passport is the only legal document that proves your identity outside of the UK. If you get arrested or need medical care you will also need your passport. To sign contracts or even many hotels require a passport! You should NEVER let it expire!! Remember your EU health card too! You need to think of worst case scenarios. What if your plane is diverted to Egypt and you have no passport!!! Go down and get your passport today.

You will need your passport. I regularly travel to France and I need my passport to get back into England. If these conflicting answers confuse you then get confirmation from the British Embassy (I think there is one in Nicosia).

If your ID is an European Identity card, you can travel on it, also to England. I often do with my Dutch 'European Identity Card'.
If your card is new (from after Cyprus joined the EU) it should mention it on the card.
If your card does not mention the different countries, ask at the place where you apply for an ID card if your card (or the new replacements) are also for traveling abroad.

Do not listen to the English in this case, they do not have an ID card, they do not know what they are and what the rules and laws are for them.
