A conference of Balkan leaders averted a blowup over Kosovo after Serbian President Boris Tadic threatened to veto any recognition of Kosovo's independence. Delegates to the South East European Co-operation Process meeting have agreed on a neutral position since the positions of the Balkan countries on Kosovo differ.
Serbia wants to cooperate with countries in the region and aims to join the European Union, but with Kosovo as "a region of Serbia," Tadic told at the meeting. Bulgarian President Sergei Stanishev mentioned that Serbian and Kosovo deputies sat at the same table and the three-day meeting bore "a new spirit of reconciliation”
