So are you a fan of tight file transfer apps that work across platforms? Then you must have tried filezilla. If you haven't, you must take a look at it:
The home of FileZilla - http://filezilla-project.org/
And this is decent (sourceforge): http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla
So it's a software similar to skype, messenger that helps transferring files at higher speed? Am I correct? What speed can it offer to download at?
Think of it as ftp on steroids. I used it for the first time to move a database file that was 1.6 Gb (yes..gigabyte) from one server to another. It was fast and when the connection crashed, it allowed me to start from the point where it had crashed instead of starting from the beginning. Here are the specs:

I use the ICQ for big files transfer. I can transfer about 4GB in 10-15 minutes, which is very cool and of course, fast.
Aeneas did you make the transfer from 2 remote servers?
How is filezilla better than other ftp clients?
gftp for example?
Btw did you use the linux or windows version?
You can find here a list of many other ftp clients, try them all and choose the best one for you
