The sleep - Terry - 07-09-2008

I was wondering what does a sleep mean from the point of view of modern science? What does it give to the brain?
Maybe this is some kind of brain test, like for hard disk. I mean like memory defragmentation etc. Let's suppose the sleep is a system test, including audio/video, in the result of which appears the dream...

Re: The sleep - Steven - 07-12-2008

sleep is a periodic state of physiological rest during which consciousness is suspended and metabolic rate is decreased

Re: The sleep - Andrewz - 07-16-2008

I never thought about that. But you found a good comparison. IT and sleep Smile

Re: The sleep - Faw_Peter - 07-18-2008

If the state of sleep is a brain test, then the dreams are our screensavers Smile

Re: The sleep - Faw_Peter - 07-25-2008

I noticed that if I sleep more than 12 hours, I feel tired all day long. That's why avoid this.

Re: The sleep - M.Helen - 07-27-2008

Be careful Peter. This way you could damage your daily living regime. You see, the human body is used to a certain regime, and when he breaks it, he suffers physically.

Re: The sleep - willyoumind - 07-31-2008

Yeah, never ever sleep more than you need it...

When we sleep over 12 hours per day, our body will becoming more weaker and has less resistance to the diseases as well!

Re: The sleep - Faw_Peter - 08-01-2008

really why is that? You wanna say that our organism is getting weaker when we sleep a lot?

Re: The sleep - willyoumind - 08-02-2008

Faw_Peter Wrote:really why is that? You wanna say that our organism is getting weaker when we sleep a lot?

Yep, correct as too much of sleeping time will only drag down your body energy and you're become more vulnerable to the viruses that surround you...

Therefore, try not to sleep over 12 hours each day. Wink

Re: The sleep - Faw_Peter - 08-03-2008

12 hours is a lot. 7-8 hours is perfect for our body, and preferably the hours of sleep should be 23 pm - 7 am

Re: The sleep - Terry - 08-23-2008

well it depends on the age. Adults should sleep 6-7 hours, whilst the old 5-6.

Re: The sleep - Karl.in.eu - 08-25-2008

Sleep is a very important activity in a person's day-to-day life. When we are asleep an important hormone called Melatonin. This hormone is a very important resource of energy for us during all day long.

Re: The sleep - willyoumind - 08-28-2008

In this cases, I will agree with Peter's thought.

Do you know that the liver starts the detoxification process in 11 pm to 1 am everyday? This means, we should going to bed before 11pm...

Re: The sleep - Benn - 08-28-2008

Generally, the human body must be integrated with the nature and feel how much to sleep. It is good to wake up together with the sunrise.

Re: The sleep - Karl.in.eu - 09-07-2008

Benn has a very good point here. The human body is like a huge biological clock. Every organ does its second job while we are slipping at different times of the night but in a very strict consequence. When this order is mixed, we don't feel that good during the day time.

Re: The sleep - Benn - 12-02-2008

The world record on the longest sleep is 18 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes.
People can sleep with opened eyes.
If 5 minutes is sufficient for you to fall asleep, then you obviously suffer from slee shortage. The ideal interval is 10 to 15 minutes.
Parents lose about 700 hours of sleep because of their first child
The best way not to sleep is surfing the net.
Snore appears only when the human is deeply fallen asleep
Your body cools when you sleep
A little noise during the first and the last two hours of sleep can easily wake you up

Re: The sleep - Terry - 02-13-2009

Yakov Tsiperovich, a man living in Minsk, hasn't slept for already 17 years. He is now 43, but looks quite young. This phenomenon happened to him after he had a clinical death, when his wife tried to poison him.
He is never tired and never wants to sleep

Re: The sleep - M.Helen - 06-26-2009

Did you know that people who wanna get slimmer must sleep more, not less than 8-9 hours. Otherwise, the food that we eat in the daytime will recompense the lack of sleep. So, who sleeps less that eats more Big Grin

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

Sleep helps solving problems. Scientists proved, nap improves creativity. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have tested whether sleep can provide ideas for solving a problem and found that this is true, especially in the phase of sleep called REM (rapid eye movement). According to researchers, REM sleep phase improves creativity by about 40%.

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

According to specialists irritability and low mood are the first indications of the fact that a person does not sleep enough. This irritability is likely to be followed by such effects as: apathy, slow speech, slow reactions to stimuli, reduced memory and inability to be spontaneous or to do several things at once.

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

How much sleep do we need?
The need for sleep varies from person to person. In general, healthy adults can work about 16 hours after 8 hours of sleep. But some people can sleep only 6 hours during the night without suffering from drowsiness. Others cant even open eyes if they didn't sleep at least 10 hours.

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

What causes sleep disorders?
Psychologists and other scientists who studied the causes of sleep problems concluded that directly or indirectly, dysfunction of the following systems may be caused by problems with brain and nervous system. cordiovascular system, metabolism, immune system.
People who are deprived of normal sleeping are those who work at night - truck drivers, barmen, waiters etc.

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

More and more people suffer from sleep disorders. For example, 10 million Americans take sleeping pills every day. But there are however some simple steps that can make a restful sleep, without the need to turn to medicines. The consequences of sleep problems involve all facets of an individual's life, his ability to relate, work, to enjoy life. The body does not feel rested, fatigue turn into irritability.

Re: The sleep - Laurentine - 09-24-2009

Go to bed every day (even on weekends) at the same time in order to avoid restless sleep.
This compliance of time will help the body to meet the biological rhythmrhythm that regulates your sleep and keep you in normal condition.
