EU Citizenship-Can you refuse? - neweuropean - 06-17-2009

Hi all! Just a legal question...

According to what I've read, EU citizenship is supplemental to whatever national
citizenship you already hold. If, for example, you're already a French citizen, and
you're happy to be a French citizen, but have no interest in the EU, can you just
say,"Thanks... but no thanks."? Can you just decline, refuse, renounce, or just
plain opt out as an individual? Since the EU is an independent government that
offers supplemental citizenship, it seems you could renounce that government's
citizenship, while still retaining your national citizenship. By renouncing the EU
citizenship, you are no longer a citizen of the EU, or able to claim it's national
rights. But you also would no longer have any responsibilities to it, either.

Of course, you would still be subject to your native nation's rules and laws.
And of course, for your nation to play in the EU, ultimately their laws would
have to mirror the EU laws. So ultimately, the EU would rule you anyway.

But as a protest move against the EU's runaway power, would it be legal?

This is not a problem at all. I don’t understand why should you refuse EU citizenship and protest against the runaway power. Can you tell us concretely, what provokes you inconvenience or indignation?

all EU countries are subject to laws imposed by union because otherwise it would not be possible to take part! However the union monitors the economic, social and political life of member countries! then why to refuze citizenship if you're directly or indirectly led by UE! I would not refuse

Either I don´t understand your question or I don´t know so much about it.

I´m a Swedish citizen. On the cover of my Swedish passport it states that Sweden (that includes me) is a member of the EU. I´ve never heard of an alternative Swedish passport that does not include the bearer of that passport as being EU membership - in other words omitting the phrase "EU member". Does that perhaps answer your question?

Benn, I'm not sure I understand you completely... The EU is different to the Schengen Area. If he is from outside the Schengen Area, he will need a visa the same as if he traveled to any other country or area. I understand that this is because his country will not have an agreement with the Schengen members, and his personal details are not on the Schengen Information System (which contains data on potentially problematic persons). Perhaps you could petition your government to join the Schengen area? ;-)

His country is not EU member and is outside from Schengen Area! I think he can travel without visa in ex sovetic countries! Is from Moldova!
