A broken windshields
is usually the result of an unpleasant incident such as a rock or other debris striking the glass, or intentional damage caused by vandals or thieves. You'll deal with your insurance company and/or repair shops to get the windshield replaced. Make the experience a bit less unpleasant by being informed and understanding your options.

Pros Only
# The biggest tip is that windshield replacement is not a do-it-yourself project. The windshield plays an integral part in keeping you safe in an accident. It provides significant structural support for the passenger compartment. A windshield is designed to keep occupants in the vehicle, while cushioning the blow should a passenger comes in contact with the glass (see Reference 1).

Some or all of those features can be compromised by improper installation. A certified professional installer undergoes specialized training and uses specialized tools and materials. A pro can complete the job in under an hour (see Reference 2). You'll spend many frustrating hours and may end up with an unsafe vehicle if you try to do it yourself without proper tools and materials.
Options
# Know what you want before you talk to an insurance adjuster or schedule repairs. You have three options when it comes to choosing a new replacement windshield.

Ask for an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) replacement at your auto dealer's service facility. You'll get a new windshield that is identical to the old one, including the automaker's logo.

Ask for an OEM replacement at an auto glass shop and you'll get a new windshield made to the same exact specifications as the old one. Unless you specifically ask for "dealer OEM", it may come from a different producer and it won't have the automaker's logo stamped on it. Unless having that logo is important to you, save by choosing generic "OEM distributor" glass.
