I would like to travel to Belgium but don't really know how to go about it. Ideas? - Elton - 01-24-2011

I need to travel to Belgium in May or June to do research for an upcoming book, but have never been overseas and know very little about the country. Any suggestions on best mode of transport, best rates, best lodging, etc.? Thank you. P.S. I may need to travel first to London to meet someone helping me with the project.

Lodging... go to the website of the hotel chain FORMULA ONE. You can only book a room by internet WITH CREDIT CARD, and they are always cheap and clean and nice. around 40 euros per night, non-smoking rooms. and breakfast is 4 euro.

Belgium by each city for example...

the train and buses are everywhere. never a problem.
You should have a cheap telephone that works in Europe too. Get yourself a 50 euro phone, and use the PAY AS YOU GO cards that load up your phone with 20, 30, 40, 50 euro good for calling minutes...up to one year.

Write me when you get to Belgium / London.....my wife, and teenage kids can help you too.
good luck.

Now that's weird. I went to Belgium last week on board a United Airlines flight that had come from Chicago to Heathrow and then went on to Brussels. Failing that. Fly to London, meet your contact and then take Eurostar train to Brussels

I stayed in a holiday Inn. you always know what you are getting with a Holiday Inn. Its not overly expensive but it`s clean and comfortable.

I hired a car at the airport but I`m an experienced traveller. At least they would drive on the correct side of the road for you. Its weird for us Brits.

I would recommend a decent Sat Nav with European maps if you take that route.

Trains are good as long as you are heading for places near the train stations. Never tried the buses in Belgium.

You make sure of a good stop here in London. too much to see in the capital of God`s own Country
