How can I regain motivation as a bassist? - Lou - 01-25-2011

I've been playing the bass for over 2 years, and suddenly, I've lost motivation for it and music almost. Haven't practiced in a while, and yet I have everything I need. What can I do to motivate myself? I know it's what I want to continue doing, but I really do lack what I need the most in life at the moment. Any inspirational stories? Books? Anything?

Honestly, just take a break from it. I had the same thing happen with the piano and when I tried to force myself into playing it, I hated it. I didn't play for 3 months and then one day I felt like I wanted to, so I did, and everything was good again. What is that old saying... Familiarity breeds contempt?

Listen to bands with great bassists. Find some songs of theirs and then try to learn them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush would both be good starting points.

Ramble on is an awesome song for bass.

If your problem is skill, then try some lessons.

If nothing motivates you then you're probably not meant to be a musician, or at least a bassist.

Youtube videos, my friend. I haven't been on a super long hiatus from guitar yet, but I've had little spells here and there. Go look up some videos of a band or bassist you love and see if that helps. When I look up videos I'll sit there and go "This is why I'm playing, because I want to do THAT one day."
