URGENT - what is the current situation for travel between North and South Cyprus? - ThomasVRose - 01-25-2011 Can anyone shed any light on what the deal is re travelling between North and South Cyprus? There seem to be a lot of conflcting reports. I want to get a boat from Turkey to North Cyprus - will I be able to then cross into the South and would someone who flies into the South be able to cross into the North? I know it's possible for day trips, but is it now OK for longer periods also? Any help would be appreciated! Re: URGENT - what is the current situation for travel between North and South Cyprus? - Bird - 01-25-2011 it is still difficult to stay for lond peroids. Re: URGENT - what is the current situation for travel between North and South Cyprus? - DavidCPeters - 01-26-2011 If you are a holder of EU passport there are no issues...if you are brave enough to try. Once you arrive in N.Cyprus via Turkey, proceed to Ledra Palace checkpoint in Northern side of Nicosia, and exit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with your EU passport; walk the 100 meters, and just walk to the Greek side. If you want, pass by the Greek police and show them your EU passport. They can do nothing, except ask you nasty question or so...Try...it is worth it...I did it and once done, it feels great. Likewise, if you arrive on the Greek side, there are no problems for you if you are a holder of EU passpaort. Passport holders of non-EU may have to try a little harder; but even for them it should really work. Re: URGENT - what is the current situation for travel between North and South Cyprus? - JohnKHayek - 01-26-2011 no problems in crossing the border if you are a Eu passport holder. If you are driving then you have to purchase seperate insurance, south - north is 10Cyp pounds for 3 days. There is a limit (very tight) on what you can bring back (last i heard it was 40 cigs from the north to the south) best of not bothering with anything. Although slightly cheaper on the north. Going from the south to the North is very relaxed, just a matter of getting your visa stamped and displaying your passport and insurance (if applicable) From the North to the South is a bit more uncomfortable, you pass the North checkpoint to get your Visa stamped then there is another point (UK police) they ask you questions where have you been etc and look over your car. nothing they can do really, aside from confiscate any goods purchased. Not sure why the other post states if you are brave enough, we are UK citizens recently moved to Cyprus and we never have a problem, I drive in a South Cyp car with south Cyp registration. |
