Chemistry what does R mean in the equation? - JoshuaLHollars - 01-25-2011

What does R mean in the following equation:

PV=nRT

Re: CHEMiSTRY!!!!!!!!!!? - Algund - 01-25-2011

R is the "gas constant" which can have different values depending on the units of measurement used for the other variables in the equation

often when using (atm) for pressure, (Liters) for volume, and (Kelvin) for temperature, the value of R is:
0.08602 L-atm / mol-K

Here are all of the values for "R" you may need for pressure volume problems:

0.08206 L-atm/ mol -K
8.314 J/mol-K
1.987 cal/ mol-K
8.314 m^3-Pa/ mol-K
62.36 L-torr/ mol-K

R is the Gas Constant
R=0.082057 liter atm mol^-1 k^-1
R=8.3144 J mol^-1 K^-1
R= 1.987 cal mol^-1 K^-1
For most gas law calculations, the units will be V = liters, P = atm, T deg K, n = mol so R will equal 0.082057
