The supposed advantage is that the borders are open.
The disadvantage is red tape, extra expense, lack of political control, unchecked imports, a huge payment by government to prop up the Brussels dictatorship making our tax regime the highest in Europe let alone the rest of the world.
The EU has to me no advantage and more disadvantages.

Advantages:
Guaranteed trade within the EU trading bloc. No tariffs or trade barriers. EU is gaining on the dollar, and will probably override NAFTA and other American preferential trade agreements.
Disadvantage:
High costs of operating a business. The EU is generally a lest competitive place to start a business because of the high labour costs and welfare policies. Generally the EU is home to the higher-end of the service sector jobs, rather than factory, etc.
