A new 2.2 bluetooth version is now being developed by a group of professional team. It is expected to give a 100 times faster speed than the current 2.0 speed.
At the same time, Nokia Siemens Networks declared to increase the data transfer through EDGE to 592 kb/sec. It's a change only on soft level. Besides, Nokia Siemens prepares the technology EGPRS 2B, which will raise the data transfer speed to 1.2 Mbits/sec. Can't wait to see and test all these!!!

What's the point of improving edge when 3g is all around?

No John, you're not right. Not every network can afford to cover the entire country with 3g coverage. This is too expensive, while EDGE goes through standard GSM networks.

I don't find bluetooth very useful. It allows transferring data only at 10 meter distance. For our modern world, 10 meters means nothing. Just compare it to wifi which transfers data at 300 meters. So bluetooth has no future.

Bluetooth is safer from health point of view, it's radiation is much lower than wifi so it can be safely used for wireless stereo headsets and connecting mobiles together. Can you transfer files from mobile to mobile via wifi?

as far as I know, it's no - we can't transfer files using wifi from phone to phone. But, we can't do it by default. If we install special software on windows mobile, it will support file transfer by establishing a local area connection between phones.

The future is for wifi. However, I heard it gives more radiation than bluetooth or any other wireless device, which I find not quite good, since I use wifi quite often.

I wouldn't say wifi is a limit. It offers transferring data at 300 meters, if there are no barriers on the wave's way, otherwise it may give only 20-50 meters. I believe in the future we will be able to transfer data by using radios. This is the best can happen. uper

I don't like the fact that most phone producers have forgotten about placing infrared port into phones. That's because they can also be used as TV remote controls.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

yes, I know this trick and also used it when I had an Irda smartphone. Though, Nokia still produces these kinds of phones. Though, I don't know another model with built-in irda which is newer than N95 black

Some interesting news I have found
Quote:The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has announced it will introduce two new Bluetooth standards, called 10x and 100x, by the middle of 2009, according to a Thursday report. The former, 10x, will work together with WLAN for faster data transfer rates, while Bluetooth 100x will have use USB-like speeds, although without wires. Currently, Bluetooth 2.0 is capable of a maximum of 3Mbps. The new 10x standard should increase that cap to 30Mbps, while the 100x, as the name implies, up to at least 300Mbps.
The new speeds should allow for wireless video streaming or printing via mobile devices, though handsets will need to have WLAN or ultra wideband (UWB) radios. Bluetooth 10x will make the debut initially because current handsets have the necessary built-in Wi-Fi (WLAN) modules to support its data link feature, while the fastest Bluetooth 100x will need to wait for the more widespread integration of faster UWB radios to accommodate the higher Bluetooth speeds.
As we can see, future bluetooth are useless without wifi. Can you imagine a 300 Mbps bluetooth? I mean - WOW!

What I would really be surprised of, it's if it is invented a technology that will allow transferring data worldwide, wirelessly, without internet or other applications. Some kind of world wifi/bluetooth.

I see no future for EDGE. 3G offers 7.2 Mb per second is very fast and nobody would search for other internet data systems. EDGE is slowly dying, am not sure if the new phones have included this feature.
