The term "New Year" comes from French ( "Réveillon") and means "lookout" or "feast at midnight". Hence the tradition of having a rich meal and not to sleep in the night of the years. Also among the New Year traditions are also the games, music, greetings to chase away the evil from the year ends and cordial reception of the following year.
There are New Year customs that have survived only in rural areas (extinction of lights symbolizing the darkness and chaos and lighting them as symbol of birth and faith). In many urban areas the New Year customs and traditions were replaced with fun and fireworks.

Besides the customs and traditions, exist and superstitions on New Year's Eve. Those who believe in superstitions, must not to wash clothes, not to sew or to knit in the night of the year (without luck), should not enter the new year without the money in your pocket (it say, that, so will be the new year which comes), is not good to be in debt, to that they say that debt will still exist next year etc..

Also, tradition says you should not throw anything out of the house on the first day of new year because you will throw the luck. Also on the first day of the year's, best not to go out of the house, until a brunette person will not pass your threshold (according to tradition, people brunettes bring good luck and happiness, and the red and blonde bad luck).

In the night of the years is good to make a wish, for it is likely to come true. All New Year's Eve is good to make much noise, like loud noises to chase away evil spirits. If you did not yet chose the outfit for New Year's Eve party, opt for red clothes (or even choose to wear a red enhancement) because red symbolizes happiness and luck in love

January was established as the first month of the year by the Roman Calendar. It was named in honour of the god Ianus. Ianus has two faces, one looks in the past, the other in future. The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and the new year started on 1 March. Tha Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolf monath, because wolves came in village for food. That are some facts about January origin

Kissing at midnight:
Kissing those dearest to us at midnight is not only to share a moment of celebration with our favorite people, but also to ensure those affections and ties will continue throughout the next twelve months.
