Since the legislation of the European Communities has priority over national laws, and the economic freedom of the member states is nearly non-existent. And the powers conferred on the European Communities (and the European Union) are not restricted to the economy only; the European Union ''controls'' many facets of the European societies.

So, isn't it an illusion that European countries (the member states, that is) are still sovereign?

And if they haven't lost their sovereignity now, aren't they bound to lose it eventually when the European Union is developing so fast?

Over time they shall lose what little independence they have left from the EU.

actually, theres an argument that the EU has strengthened europe because people can move easily through out. also because business have greater ease to invest outside of their own borders the stability of Europe has grown since companies have investments in other EU countries and any skirmish could harm the economic stability.

i guess it really matters on how you look at the issue.

Well, my idea of a sovereign state is one that has the 'supreme' or over-ruling power. So I don't believe you can adequetely call the EU member nations sovereign states anymore when the laws passed in the EU Parliament overrule those passed in the national in the individual states parliament.
