World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the eighth expansion for the hugely popular MMO. Players take to an entirely new region to fight against a new host of enemies. With a myriad of new mechanics to discover, new places to explore and more fights to experience, Shadowlands manages to be entertaining and fresh.

Shadowlands runs on pretty much any desktop or laptop with a processor, from Mac’s newer mobile M1 chips to top-of-the-line PCs. What you see will vary wildly depending on the capabilities of your machine; one of WoW’s strengths is that it adapts well — particularly for more or less powerful graphics cards.

Shadowlands basically opens up with the fabric between life and death being torn asunder, by the current Big Bad of the game, Sylvanas. Basically, she rips apart the crown of the Lich King, and it opens a big portal in the sky to the WoW versions of Heaven and Hell. Key leaders from both factions are kidnapped to the Hell side (The Maw, here) as are you. But you quickly bust out and go to Heaven (Oribos) where you are tasked with rescuing the leaders, stopping Sylvanas (again), and figuring out why the afterlife is broken.
Without spoiling for those who haven't played, Shadowlands represents a big test for Blizzard in a sense. The Jailer is one of the first new "mega threats" Blizzard has introduced, without relying on previous lore or characters to prop him up. To that end, Blizzard weaved various plot threads across previous expansions while also linking The Jailer to some of the game's outstanding mysteries. The implications for Warcraft 3's Scourge, the Lich King itself, and even the ties to the Burning Legion (the Warcraft universes' big evil) are tantalizing as a lore fan, and Blizzard's in-game cinematics have taken a step up to help deliver those plot points.

While veteran players will immediately feel at home, Shadowlands also features plenty of onboarding for new players. Blizzard has done an incredible job at making this 16-year-old game accessible for those players looking to take their first steps into this exciting world.

The expansion offers three price points. A Base Edition at $40 just includes the game, which requires a monthly fee of $13 to $15. The Heroic Edition at $60 adds one free boosted character to level 50 — Shadowlands leveling takes characters from 50 to the new max level of 60 — plus a mount and the quest for a new armor transmog set. The Epic Edition at $80 includes all that plus cosmetic weapon and hearthstone effects, 30 days of game time, and an in-game pet.
