Peace be upon you!
The word Caliph comes from Arabic word Khalifah. It means the one who comes after, successor, vicegerent, substitute, deputy.
Almighty Allah says:
Allah has promised to those among you who believe and do good works that He will surely make them Caliphs (Successors) in the earth, as He made Successors (from among) those who were before them; and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them; and that He will surely give them in exchange security (and peace) after their fear: They will worship Me, they will not associate anything with Me. Then whoso is ungrateful after that, they will be rebellious. [Ref: chapter 24 , verse 56]
The holy Quran has used the word Kalifah / caliph as :
1- Representative of God = Prophets are as Caliphs of God. (example of holy Adam, 2:31)
2- Representative of a prophet = They may be prophets or not and they maybe contemporaries of master prophet or succeed them after master’s death. (prophets in Israelities were caliphs of holy Moses.)
As holy prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him and all prophets) foretold, caliphs came after his death and then kings continued in the spiritually weaker era. He also prophecied the advent of a reformer in latter days to help Islam to reform. All major religions are waiting for a reformer too with some or more variation in description.
Two hundred million people in 190 countries in the world including EU area, has accepted that reformer, who appeared in subcontinent India in 1889. They are facing severe persecution in some places.(w.thepersecution.org/) . While, others are still waiting for the reformer to come. Many have forgotten the subject altogether. Situation resembles with first coming of Jesus who was slowly and steadily accepted by many yet some are still waiting.
Currently, the fifth caliphate of that holy reformer in Islam ( w.alislam.org ) continues. On 27 may 2008, they celebrated 100 years of the establishment of their caliphate with teary prayers and resolutions to continue to promote divine peace which was the real message of Islam. The reformer as the subservient of blessed holy prophet said he was sent :
1) to re-establish spiritual relation of human with Allah based upon love and sincerity.
2) no wars on the name of Allah and peace be installed.
3) to re-illumine the divine truths.
4) to develop spirituality in human which is lost under the darkness of selfishness.
5) Reflection of attributes of Allah be shown in human by self-example---by means of prayers and spiritual attention.
6) to remind people about the pure unity of Allah.
His humble claim was to achieve all mentioned goals not by him -- but with the help of Lord of heaven and Earth.
May the world be a peaceful place for individuals and families.
