Officials from both countries said they have reached an agreement to set a missile defense system on the territory of Poland. Instead, Poland requests billions of dollars for consolidating its air force. Russia is against the treaty. About a month ago, the Czech Republic agreed to set up an advanced radar system for US missiles.
The missile defense which is to be established in Poland will cost the USA about 100 billion dollars.
As usually the Republicans back this initiative and the Democrats don't...

On August 22, the US Secretary Condoleeza Rice signed with Polish authorities a deal to lcate a part of its controversial missile defence system. It angered Russia, which, in turn, warned that the base could become a target for a nuclear strike.
Here are the specific features of these missiles
- Look like ordinary missiles, but warheads are not loaded
- Intended to destroy target with kinetic energy
- Closing speed at interception is 24,000km/h (15,000mph)

After the deal was signed, there were many speculations that Russia would make a missile hit over Poland because of security reasons, however, the Russian Defence Minister, Lavrov, denied this.

How you imagine it? Just hit poland with missiles? Thats crazy. Of course he denied this. That do not bring any security at all.

i wonder why the new states they want so bad to leave russian influence behind and they want to fall into something equally bad...american influence...why can't there just be europe..!! europe must grow up and stand on it's feet and develp it's own defence policy and army...relying onto americans or russians for defence will only mean returning favours to them anytime they want for their protection...how can this be good..?? europeans must realise that we must get our affairs in our hands and really support each other...for once...!!!

Many European states are actually quite independent. But, these are the ideas and conceptions of some EU states that create problems for the entire Europe. For example, I find France, Italy, Germany to be independent states. Poland has a bone to pick with Russia, and therefore it makes the entire Europe be involved in their misunderstanding with Russia.

unfortunately that is always the case with EU nations that border non-EU nations, especially when they were supressed by them for some time....

We want desperately to be friends to all but servants/serfs to none. It's the latter part that is difficult if you've been at the receiving end of historic spankings. Hopefully, we'll make it.

Bah.... how did you get that idea! See below my avatar. I'm Romanian. I'm assuming Chris is Greek. When I said 'we' I meant Romanians and Greeks. Both in the EU. Both neighbors of former masters. So is Poland and the Baltic republics. We Romanians have the extra blessing of having been under the rule of two huge empires that border the EU. So we have learned (and still learning) to tread carefully. So thanks but no thanks, we don't want anyone's missiles.

THe fact Russia will place the antimissile system in Kaliningrad will make Poland think more before concludinganything with the USA. The EU should has banned Poland for that, since it's a threat to Europe's entire security.

he'll then have to retire. Yet, this is only his position. You can't make someone retire just because he doesn't support the idea of EU integrity. Who knows, he might be right.
In regards to missiles. At the EU-Russia summit, Nicolas Sarkozy and Silvio Berlusconi tried to convince Russia and USA to cease their threats against each other.

Poland and Czechlovakia are traitors to peace and Europe by allowing the US warmonger more spaces for its war machine of killing . They should be removed for the sake of sanity and peace . people need to realize the USA as the worlds main warmongering lunatic that will start world war 3 and that should be curtailed by the wiser nations and peoples.

Today Obama visited Czech Republic, and guess what? Nothing new. Although he promised to review the necessity of US Pro missiles, he declared "the United States will maintain a safe, secure and effective arsenal to deter any adversary and guarantee that defence to our allies including the Czech Republic".

Obama is doing great in this matter. Yesterday he asserted that he's ready to cancel and recall the PRO missile system from Czech if Iran is ready to cancel their works on nuclear development. That's a good condition, let's see how Iran answers.

Cmon imagine that you are Iran leader, whould you submit? If USA are keeping pro they have problems with Russia so your enemies enemies are your friends. If they cancell nuclear programm they have Russia USA relations warming up while you have no nukes. Poor trade isnt it?

It is simple, Poland is a pet of USA, Poland doesn't interesting in a strong United Europe as well as USA. Yes USA can put their missiles in Poland, but does Europe need to aim Russian missiles on itself? For what? Because USA afraid of backward Iran? People, you are the union of a great nations, please open your eyes, and make your own policy for the good of EU. I really think that EU must be the source of culture in the world with our help of course
