Yes it does. This is why coaches are so important. Good coaches are able to motivate athletes to compete at the best of their abilities.

motivation is everything
it has been defined as
‘the direction and intensity of ones efforts’

if you have no eventual goal you are not driven as far as you need to be successful to the best of your ability.

I enjoyed my training much more and, more importantly, swam much better when training with strict motivation and goal setting plans.

Without motivation it's hard to achieve anything. That's why I think it's important to have a goal. Swim teams are great, because your teammates and coach motivate you and it makes it fun.

Swimming is an extremely mental sport! You can train harder than the best swimmer, but if you get up on the blocks and you're unmotivated, you're not going to do your best. You may still win because you are that great of a swimmer, but you could have done better if you were motivated. During high school season I know I am swimming for my team and my team is always there cheering for my, so I do my best. However, out of high school season, I don't do anywhere near as well because I have no motivation.

Oh dude motivation is required in swimming above all sports. Teh practices are so long and tiring, sometimes you will wonder why, sometimes you will really want to quit, but if you keep yourself motivated you can overcome.

I swam a 500 at teh last meet, and oh trust me, it needs uber motivation to just complete.
