Is there a need? Is it hard to get a work visa? I would like to work in Smolyan specifically if that changes things.

I dont think it would be too hard, as long as you have the right degrees in education, my friend after getting his masters in english education began teaching in prague.

Go online and apply, if you are a teacher. Many other countries want us to come and teach English there. I hear they pay well. But other countries have laws that WE NEED here, they won't let you come unless you can prove you will have a real working job when you get there. We have too many people coming, to NO JOB.

My friend traveled all around Europe teaching English. However he had his TESOL certification. It's not necessary for every country (it wasn't in Japan), but you should check what the school's policy is.
It's usually really easy to find teaching work overseas. Here's a really good site for job listings: http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/
I didn't see anything for Bulgaria when I last checked, but keep an eye on it.
