Animal testing whats your opinion!!?
#1
Ninety-four percent of animal testing is done to determine the safety of cosmetics and household products leaving only 6% for medical research! Cosmetic testing is banned in Belgium, Netherlands and the U.K.. Europe has been phasing out all products related to animal testing since 2002 and they plan to completely ban all products by 2009. This is a big step in the right direction for millions of animals who were helplessly killed during tests for cosmetics and household products. Unfortunately the U.S. is still home to many companies who continue to legally perform horrible test on animals even though the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission doesn’t require animal testing for cosmetics or household products!

Most of the animals that are used in testing are bred just for testing, but many others come from the pound. Mice, rabbits, dogs, guinea pigs, cats and monkey’s are the most commonly used animals for tests. It has been proven that there is already enough existing safety data, as well as in vitro (test tube) alternatives to make animal testing for cosmetics and household products even more unnecessary and unethical. By just listing the names of the tests I will be able to give you a better idea of what these poor animals go through. Whole Body, Short-term Toxicity, Skin Penetration, Skin Irritancy, Eye irritancy, Skin Sensitization, Phototoxicity & Photosensitisation, Mutagenicity, Carcinogenicity, Reproductive Toxicity, Teratogenicity and Finished Product Testing are all common tests performed on animals.

The LD50 test short for lethal dose , is one of the worst tests that was developed back in 1927 and is still in use today. Groups of animals are dosed with different amounts of a test substance in order to determine the dose which kills half of the animals! Animals are often force-fed the substance. The LD50 test is known to use huge, unrealistic doses that are completely unrelated to possible exposure levels. There are now other tests available that use less animals and lower doses, yet this old, discredited LD50 test continues. During another common test, the Draize eye-and skin-irritation test, rabbits are immobilized in full-body restraints while a substance is dripped or smeared into their eyes or onto their shaved skin. Rabbits often scream in pain and many break their necks trying to get free. The Draize test has been proven in studies to “grossly over predicted the effects that could be seen in the human eye, and does not reflect the eye irritation hazard for man". The human four-hour patch skin test has proved to provide chemical skin-irritation data that are “inherently superior to that given by a surrogate model, such as the rabbit.”

What is your point of view on Animal testing and what do think the authors point of view is in this

Terrible thing to do to animals. Cruel. Does not show human-related results in many cases. Terrible. I mean, people out there who have bunnies like i do, how awful can it get!!?

Well I would certainly hope that ANYONES opinion on this is that it's absolutely terrible! Only someone with no heart could hurt a poor little animal... (Which, in reality, is WAY to many people...)

I feel so helpless about all of this. I am aware of the horrors that animals must endure because of the idiotic tests certain human beings put them through. I barely view such people as humans, and I can hardly comprehend that these events actually happen on this planet. Not only are animals tortured because of unnecessary testing, but the method by which we harvest them for food are hideous examples the human capability, and could be so much more humane. 13 slaughterhouses currently exist in America, each of which offer no consideration to the thousands and THOUSANDS of animals murdered each day. I understand that humans are omnivores, but these companies have the responsibility and the CAPABILITY to demonstrate humane treatment toward their animals.

We should all respect animals as being living, breathing creatures that are fully equipped with nerve-endings, and as such can experience PAIN.

I believe that this current age of animal abuse will be looked back upon in a few decades as being shockingly similar to the Holocaust.

My opinion: (I'm a UKer so obviously the situation is different here)

Animal testing for genuine medical research is acceptable, because it is necessary. A number of "alternative" methods exist, and they are used wherever possible. This is the law in the UK - you will not get a licence to test on animals if a non-animal test will do. I firmly believe that more effort needs to be put into improving and increasing the range of alternatives, so that eventually animal testing can be phased out completely. However, at the moment I believe animal testing is still a vital part of the whole process.

Animal testing for any non-vital research (eg cosmetics, etc) is totally wrong. This is because the things being tested are not necessities - they are luxuries. I do not believe it is ever acceptable to cause suffering and death to animals for the sake of human vanity.

Authors opinion:

I get the impression the author, like myself, is generally aginast animal testing and would rather it didn't happen. I think the author is completely against the use of animals in cosmetic testing and the use of animals from other sources like pounds. I get the feeling they would prefer the USA to have similar laws to the UK / Europe.
