Switzerland will join the Schengen area on December 12, 2008. This decision was taken by the ministries of internal affairs of the European member-countries.
Thus, Switzerland will becomeSchengen's 25th member. Schengen already includes two countries non-members of the EU - Norway and Island. Passport control between Switzerland and the rest Schengen members will be ceased on 12 December at the borders, and on 29 March in airports.
The EU countries that are not members of the Schengen area are: UK, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus. All Schengen members have access to a common police database about missing and wanted persons, criminals as well as about the stolen cars.

that's great. It will make travelling for tourists even easier. In many countries, you can receive a visa for the Schengen area, which means you can travel across these states without being bothered by customs officers. Switzerland is expected to be invaded with tourists.

You should know that Romanians and Bulgarians are not yet allowed to travel freely in Switzerland. A Switzerland government will soon create a referendum where officials will vote for or against allowing these nationalities travel without visa in Switzerland.

This will make Switzerland just another country for guest workers. Switzerland is unique in its cleanness and nature, guest workers will ruin everything. I don't think the locals are very happy with joining the Schengen area

From what I know, the Swiss are not patient people. They won't wait and do nothing for improving the situation. Immigrants will simply not be allowed to make disaster. Swiss police is very operative.

Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus are expected to join the Schengen area in 2010, so they'll soon become Switzerland's mates.

There are many conditions that Romania and Bulgaria must first fulfill for joining this area.

The most important is that these two countries reduce the level of corruption at customs. Customs officers are known to be very corrupted, while this is inadmissible for the Schengen area.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

The Schengen customs officers are very competent people. They receive good salaries and are respected people. They would not take bribes since there's no need in this.

well then it is here where we can apply the quote "If money can't solve anything, then big money can". Everything is possible as long as we are humans.
By the way, does anybody know about any visible consequences that Switzerland joined Schengen area?

I see Switzerland's joining as being an important step, since there will be created a common police database, and thus collaboration will become closer, which means less criminals and more safety for both EU and Swiss citizens.

Along with a facility for European tourists, Switzerland's joining into Schengen area will benefit non-European nationals residing in Switzerland who needed a separate visa to enter other Schengen nations.
