New Europe Personnel (<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.neweuropepersonnel.co.uk">http://www.neweuropepersonnel.co.uk</a><!-- w -->) is looking for a Chief Engineer (REF: CE/BIR/080508)
With the current and potential growth of the region, we recognise that it is essential to invest in an engineering role that is going to develop and improve engineering skills in the future. The primary function of the Chief Engineer is to train and develop the thirty strong Eastern engineering team at varying stages of their career development.
The role will be a site-based position targeting areas where improvements can be made. This will cover the following:
- Setting out capability of engineers when they first join the company.
- Training in setting out techniques on site.
- Use and understanding of modern computer aided setting out instruments.
- Modernisation of existing equipment.
- Supervision of the works on site
- Recording delays where setting out information is incomplete or incorrect.
- Development and progression of engineers.
- Review paperwork required by engineers, senior engineers and sub-agents to allow more time for supervising the works.
- Ensure computers are available on site for engineers to make best use of time saving IT procedures.
- Investigate best software available for use on site.
- Standardisation of engineering practices.
- Ensure engineering staff feel valued.
- Assist in Engineer recruitment.
- Assist in management of engineering resources with a view to ultimately managing this on behalf of the Ops Director.
- OGL surveys.
- Management of earthworks volumes.
- Temporary Works & Crane Coordination.
- Commercial development for engineers.
- Coordination of IT for Engineers.
- Mentor Student Engineers and arrange training.
- Input in to Performance and Development Reviews.
- Respnsible to Project Manager

6 years min experience of major engineering works
Essential experience:
- Excellent setting out skills and is capable of using/training others in the use of all modern setting out equipment.
- Is proactive in promoting and sharing learning within the site teams and across the business.
- Has clearly developed and very high standards for safety and quality.
- Is dedicated to quality and excellence in engineering.
- Strong Civils Engineering background
Other competencies:
- Has a good understanding of materials specifications.
- It is envisaged that specific contracts may be targeted and individuals will often be given support on a one to one basis out in the field. The aim will be to develop a strong core of engineers, which will reduce the reliance on freelance support.
- Good technical knowledge and can provide technical support to the site teams
- Good IT skills.
- Good knowledge of Temporary Works (TW) and TW procedures.
- A strong team player
- Good communication, presentation and enrolment skill, written and verbal.
- Excellent people management skills
- Must have a UK driving licence
