What does the European Union hope achieve? And what were the implications of its creation?

I need a overview on the European Union. Especially on the implication of it creation. What does that really mean, implication on its creation? Thank you in advance for anyone who could answer.

The original purpose of its creation was to avoid causes of war between Germany and France by making them, and the other original members, economically dependent on each other.

However, from the 1970s the economic strength of Germany has meant that, in concert with France, they are now trying to create a United States of Europe, a superstate that would be dominated economically, and therefore politically, by Germany and France.Such a superstate would have a bigger population and economy than USA, and the President would be the most powerful person in the world.

Last French ruler that tried to establish a united Europe - Napoleon.
Last German ruler that tried to establish a united Europe - Hitler.

Both failed, so now Germany and France are trying to achieve the same objective through economic and political methods rather than through aggression.

The main implication for the initial push was, as already mentioned, trying to avoid war between Germany and France. Needless to say, it wasn't the only implication - things like aid and support from the US, beginning of the standoff against communism and simple economic interests were also important. The ECSC was designed according to an earlier union between the Benelux countries, which achieved considerable success. There never was a clearly defined unitary purpose of the Union, and it's probable there never will be. A European superstate is by far not a necessary endpoint. But there probably will be further integration - so far as it will beneficial economically and geopolitically. It's important to remember that these two things, economics and politics, are paramount when talking of European integration. Idealistic notions such as federalism and/or nationalism should be set aside as merely accessory forces.

If you are writing something, be sure to include a quote from the preamble of the EU Treaty, regarding an "ever-closer union". Interpretations of this can be the key to what the EU is about. Also you can take a look at the 3 article of the same treaty (that one's mostly hogwash though).
